Our Story - Kumki Spices

Kumki Spices ™ is a label under Erda Enterprises and was founded by Madhavi in 2023.

Kumki Spices draws its inspiration from the captivating world of ‘Kumkis’. These majestic wild elephants play a crucial role in safeguarding the tribal villages of Kerala and Tamil Nadu by keeping rice-stealing elephants and other wild tuskers at bay. After 6-10 months of training, Kumki’s join the government services officially and serve until they retire at 60. Kumkis contribute to the harmonious coexistence of humanity and wildlife by safeguarding farmers & local tribes during harvest when wild elephants come to feed on their crops. Kumkis guide the wild tuskers back into the forests and help rescue wounded elephants. 

Kumki spices is a reflection of this mystical land where Kumki’s roam through the hills, harmonizing humanity and wildlife along the borders of Kerala.  Our commitment is to provide the essence of authentic Malabar spices, echoing the strength and wisdom of the Kumkis.

Madhavi has lived in diverse regions, gaining a deep appreciation for our country's varied cuisines. Born and raised in Jabalpur, her husband's love for cooking introduced her to the rich tastes of North Indian cuisine. They love to cook together and feed their family and friends over lunches that span hours and dinners that form core memories. For Madhavi, aromatics aren't just ingredients - they're the heartbeat of every dish, weaving tales of love and connection."

A pivotal moment came when Madhavi's elder son, Yash, was just 15-20 days old. It was a regular day and she was in the kitchen tempering the food with whole garam masalas. To her surprise, Yash began to drool and then cry. Concerned, she consulted a pediatrician, who astutely pointed out that Yash might be craving the aromatic flavors. This realization left an indelible mark on Madhavi.

As Yash grew to the age of 6 months, introducing solid foods became a challenge. However, Madhavi, being the intuitive mother she is, noticed a significant shift when she incorporated aromatic soups into his meals. His eyes lit up with delight, and he eagerly consumed the entire bowl. This experience became a heartfelt revelation for Madhavi - the early attraction to the stimulants of aromatic spices, even at such a tender age.

At this moment, the seeds of Kumki Spices were sown. Madhavi's personal journey as a mother, combined with her understanding of the rich tapestry of Indian cuisines, fuelled her passion to create a brand that resonates with the heart and soul of every family, infusing the magic of aromatics into the everyday culinary experience.
